Burugu couple pockets Sh1.2 billion from sale of Regis Runda Academy

The Burugu couple of Peter Burugu and Mary Burugu have pocketed Sh1.23 billion from the sale of their school Regis Runda Academy. The school was sold to South African multinational known as the ADvTECH Group.

“The ADvTECH, Africa’s leading private education provider, has expanded its Makini Schools offering in Nairobi, Kenya, by acquiring Regis Runda Academy (Regis) for Sh1.23 billion (approximately R172 million),” the multinational said in a statement.

Following the sale, ADvTECH has announced that the school that currently has a capacity of around 2,000 students will now be rebranded.

Co-Op post

“Situated in the fast-developing Ridgeways area, northeast of Nairobi, the school, with a current capacity of 2 000 students, will be rebranded as Makini School Runda,” stated ADvTECH. The company further announced that it will take over operations at the school starting from August 20, 2025.

The firm further announced that it will be investing in AI-powered digital learning tools at the school. It will also implement significant enhancements to sporting facilities at the Regis site to elevate the student experience and maximize academic outcomes.

“We are delighted to increase our Makini Schools footprint in Kenya and to bring the brand’s compelling proposition to parents and students in one of the fastest developing regions of Nairobi,” said ADvTECH Group chief executive officer Geoff Whyte said.

Reacting to the sale, the Burugu couple said that they had always been convinced that they would let the school go at some point as it was not part of their family’s core businesses.

“The business of school operations is not among our core family businesses, and we always felt limited in ensuring the longer-term growth of the school in our competitive education sector,” the Burugu couple said in a communication to the school’s stakeholders.

Besides the school, the couple has been known to own other businesses that altogether could fetch billions. These businesses include the Kiambu Mall and the gated community Runda gardens.
