After controversial Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu was shot to death, detectives investigating the murder swooped on three persons who had met the lawyer hours before his murder. Among these individuals were George Wainaina who is an official of the KANU party and a businessman, his relative and Mbobu’s friend.
When Wainaina was arrested at his home, detectives ransacked his house and found some Sh50 million in cash. The money was stashed in a safe. The detectives also reportedly recovered a gun and phones.
Also arrested were Paul Mbugua who is a relative of Wainaina and Eric Gichuhi who was a friend of Mbobu. The trio was released on Saturday after spending about 96 hours in custody.
However, since their release, Wainaina is yet to recover the Sh50 million that was carted away by the detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. He is also yet to get his phones and gun back.
When queried about the huge amount of money he was found with, Wainaina told the media that the money should not be a surprise as he is a businessman who handles huge amounts of cash, sometimes to the tune of billions.
He said that he does business internationally and has been in the world of business for decades. Wainaina claimed that he made his first million in August 1990. Some of his clients, he claimed, have included organizations associated with the United Nations such as the World Food Programme.
“I supplied the World Food Programme and was paid in dollars. It was a lot of money. I have always been in business since childhood,” he said, adding that the money totaling Sh50 million that detective had found in his house was for business purposes.

He claimed that he runs some sort of a banking system with his business friends which avails financing to business people within his circles easily.
“I run a parallel banking system together with my friends. We finance businesspeople. We can raise as much as Sh2 billion if needed. So the money police seized was being held in trust for someone else,” said George Wainaina.
Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu was killed in a drive-by shooting incident that occurred near the Lang’ata-Magadi road junction. He was reportedly driving home. Since his death, investigations into his life and death have exposed a man who was battling court cases in which he was sued by his clients for allegedly failing to remit money he received on behalf of the clients.
He was also drowning in debts he had taken from shylocks amounting to tens of millions of money after he had been allegedly blacklisted by commercial banks.
