Caroline Mutuku: Former KCSE star leading Glovo’s operation in Kenya

Glovo Kenya, a subsidiary of the global delivery company Glovo, has emerged as a key player in the country’s fast-evolving on-demand delivery market, connecting consumers to restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and retail stores through a single digital platform.

The firm, which operates primarily through its mobile application, is led by Caroline Mutuku whose rise to the position is a true testament of determination and focus.

Raised in a family of teachers, Caroline distinguished herself early, emerging among the top performers in the 2006 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam.

Co-Op post

After high school, she enrolled in medical school at an Asian institution. However, in a decisive move that would redefine her path, she opted to pursue business instead, a choice that would lay the foundation for her leadership career.

In 2009, she joined the University of Nairobi, where she pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Operations Management, graduating in 2012.

Simultaneously, between 2009 and 2011, she undertook the rigorous Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) programme at Strathmore University. By December 2011, she had earned her Chartered Accountant certification under ACCA.

Rising through the corporate ranks

Caroline began her career in 2012 at Standard Chartered Bank as the Consumer Banking Fast Track Graduate programme. She steadily rose through the ranks to become Manager, Segment Proposition and Solutions.

Over four years, she built a reputation for analytical precision and strategic thinking before exiting the bank in February 2016.

Her next chapter unfolded at McKinsey & Company, one of the world’s leading management consulting firms.

Between March 2016 and November 2021, she served in multiple roles including as Junior Associate, Associate and ultimately Engagement Manager.

In December 2021, Caroline joined Swvl, the app-based bus service operating across Nairobi, stepping into a leadership role at a time when mobility solutions were undergoing rapid digital transformation.

Within just five months under her stewardship, the Nairobi business expanded threefold. The capital became the company’s fastest-growing retail market, surging from the fifth-largest to the second-largest retail city by Gross Merchandise Value (GMV).

She currently serves as the Country Managing Director of Glovo in Kenya following her appointment in November 2022.

She has since overseen a threefold growth in the Kenyan market over three years, positioning Kenya as a medium-sized market and the most consistent performer within Glovo’s global network.
