We don’t have cash to issue digital driving licenses in Kenya – NTSA

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said that it does not have adequate cash to issue digital driving licenses in Kenya.

This comes as the wait for the digital driving licenses in Kenya inches closer to a year. It also beats sense on why the body will not issue old-format licenses which are currently in use to drivers who have been waiting to get their new devices in vain.

According to NTSA director-general Francis Meja, NTSA requires Sh. 2.1 billion for the exercise but has only Sh. 300 million.

“We want to scale it up to the public, but we only got Sh300 million for the roll out of digital driving licenses in Kenya which is not sufficient,” Mr Meja told the National Assembly committee on Transport chaired by Pokot South MP David Pkosing.

He further told MPs that the Sh. 2.1 billion sought the roll out of digital driving licenses in Kenya was enough to replace all driving licenses held by drivers in the country.

“After the replacement of the total 4.5 million licences, the NTSA will net Sh13 billion in revenue. This is good money for the exchequer,” Mr Meja said.
