Vehicle inspection fee in Kenya raised by four times

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has raised vehicle inspection fee in Kenya by four times.

NTSA director-general Francis Meja said in a public notice that the agency will increase the fees for commercial vehicle weighing more than five tonnes to Sh4,600. Under the revision, inspection charges for motorcycles will rise to Sh1,300, three-wheelers and vehicles with engine capacity of over 3000cc will cost Sh2,600, the official said.

The new rates will also see inspection charges for trucks weighing up to five tonnes pay Sh2,000.

“The National Transport and Safety Authority notifies the public that following stakeholders consultations and subsequent review of motor vehicle inspection vide Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 198, Legal Notice No. 299 dated 19 December, the new revised fee will take effect from 1st of April, 2018,” Meja said.

Previously, vehicle inspection fee in Kenya was Sh1,000 for all category of vehicles, regardless of type, size and class.

“All vehicle inspection fee in Kenya, bookings and payments shall be made through the Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) available on our website,” he added in the notice.

Commercial vehicle drivers are also being retrained from this month in an exercise that will cover more than 400,000 drivers, each paying Sh5,000.
