Every teacher in Kenya to pay Sh. 6,000 TSC training fee

TSC Training Fee: The Teachers Service Commission has hit teachers hard with a new training rule. In the new rule every teacher in Kenya will be required to cough some Sh. 6,000 training fee. The training is scheduled to start in April this year.

The commission says that the Sh. 6,000 fee will cater for all the training sessions, assessment, monitoring and evaluation as well as all other costs incurred.

Already, the Teachers Service Commission has signed a training deal for the teachers with four universities.  The training will be undertaken by Kenyatta University, Mount Kenya University, Riara University and the Kenya Education Management Institute. “The institutions will be wholly responsible for the collection of the fee directly from teachers and the commission will not be accountable for the non-payment of fees by any of the teachers or instructional leaders,” reads the agreement.

According to the new rule, the teachers employed by the TSC and those employed by private schools will have to undergo mandatory training six times in their career. Reports indicate that teachers who are already in service will be trained after every five years and every level of the training will take five years and a teacher will move from one level to the next until the sixth. Teachers who are at the beginning of the training will be required to complete seven sections of module one to be recertified.

The commission currently employs some 318,000 teachers while 154,000 teachers are employed by private schools. Further according to the agreement, all the sessions will be carried out during the school holidays while all face-to-face sessions will be undertaken at the 290 sub-county training centres across the country.

This is not the first time that teachers and the TSC are getting locked up in a training fee dispute. In 2018, the TSC announced that teachers would pay for six professional development promotion training programmes that would also determine their promotions. “You are required to undertake the TPD (Teacher Professional Development) training during the holidays and pay for yourselves,” said the TSC CEO Nancy Macharia on the TSC training fee.
