Sossion backs SRC in fresh teachers’ salary fight with TSC

TSC Audit: KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has thrown his weight behind the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in a pay dispute with the Teachers Service Commission.

Mr. Sossion, who does not see eye to eye with the TSC, has written a letter to the SRC in support of an auditing move to determine if the TSC is running two separate payrolls for teachers.

“It is in this regard that we urge you to swiftly step in, put to order the illegal payroll activities at the TSC and ensure that all payments to teachers are backdated to July 2019 and are integrated into the payroll of March 2020 since Parliament and the National Treasury have appropriated the funds in the 2019/2020 budget,” says Sossion in a letter to SRC chairperson Lynn Mengich, dated March 2.

Mr. Sossion insists that the teachers commission has been running two separate pay rolls since July last year.

Teachers who are members of KNUT has been missing pay raises after their union won a highly contested court battle last year. 103,000 teachers who were KNUT members missed the pay hike and 80,000 members abandoned the union.

“The judgment of the labour court has necessitated the preparation of two parallel payrolls in order to comply with the court’s ruling without disadvantaging teachers who are not Knut members. In this regard, the payroll for teachers who are not Knut members has factored in implementation of phase three of the 2017-2021 CBA. Their payslips will therefore reflect the enhanced pay in line with their grades,” said former TSC head of communication Kamotho Kihumba in July last year. TSC Audit.
