Alcoblow Kenya: The National Police Service and the National Transport and Safety Authority have announced the return of alcoblow. This follows an escalation of road accidents related to drunk driving.
“We will have random drink-driving alcoblow tests on major towns and highways from today,” said Police Spokesman Charles Owino, who issued a statement on Friday morning.
Data from the two bodies show that 60 people were killed between October 2 to 4 in road accidents attributed to speeding and drink-driving.
“Analysing the trend points to the need to focus more efforts towards road safety in order to prevent the unnecessary loss of lives,” their joint statement stated.

President Uhuru Kenyatta opened bars last week after a decline in COVID-19 cases which had surged since March. He also extended curfew hours. The curfew was extended from 9pm to start from 11pm to 4am, with bars now allowed to operate up to 10pm.
The police service suspended the alcoblow in November last year. This was after it was found out that the gadgets did not serve their intended purpose.
“Good Morning SCPSs. Please note that even as we await written instructions, From Today, going forward there will be no alcohol blow checks in the county until further notice. This being the case all the Alcohol Blow gadgets will be handed over in writing to OC traffic on Monday 18/11/19 on or before 1000 hours without fail,” read the internal memo from Vigilance House last year.
