KUCCPS 2020 KCSE Placement: Over 15,000 students who sat for the 2020 KCSE and scored the minimum university pass mark opted for diploma and certificate courses.
This has been revealed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). Data from KUCCPS shows that 15,547 candidates who scored C+ and above went for courses such as plumbing instead of selecting university degrees.
Also, some 10,707 candidates did not apply for degree courses despite meeting the minimum qualifications. “All efforts are being made to track 10,707 candidates with C+ and above who failed to apply for courses in universities ‘in the spirit of leaving no one behind’,” said KUCCPS chief executive Agnes Wahome.
The KUCCPS 2020 KCSE placement data further revealed that another 4,840 preferred Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to pursue courses in an employment market where university graduates are struggling to get jobs.

The preference for diplomas and certificates in technical institutions as opposed to university degrees has been interpreted as a response to the job market where technical diploma and certificate graduates are getting jobs faster than their degree counterparts.
These options have compelled KUCCPS to reopen its course selection portal for another round of revisions. The authority has set June 22 as the new date for the Second Revision of degree and diploma courses for the 2020 KCSE candidates.

“One of the biggest mistakes that students make while selecting programs is considering the choice of university ahead of the course. From our experience, the challenge is more often about selecting the highly demanded courses in highly coveted universities. If a student really desires a course, we encourage them to apply for it in universities where they will likely face less competition,” said Wahome.
