Lorry transporting Unga involved in accident. Bodaboda riders, Motorists stop vehicles to dine in

A lorry ferrying Unga along Mombasa road overturned and the Unga packets spilled all over the road. With the recent spiking inflation in the country, Kenyans could not just pass by the spillage, as a 2kg packet of Unga goes for between Sh. 200 and Sh. 250.

The scene of the accident was outside the Ole Sereni Hotel heading towards the Southern Bypass route.  The cause of the accident has not yet been established.

Passers-by grabbed as many packets as they could and ran away with the commodity. Bodaboda riders packed their share and sped off, while motorists with vehicles alighted to scramble for the expensive commodity.

Here is a clip of the accident showing the spillage on the junction to Southern Bypass just outside Ole Sereni Hotel:

The accident has caused lots of commotion on Mombasa road towards town, leading to a disruption in normal traffic flow. The reaction by Kenyans was expected since in recent times, they have had to dig deep into their pockets to buy Unga, despite the government subsidizing the product with billions.

President Ruto released a Sh. 3.5 billion subsidy on fertilizers to remedy the high maize flour prices. While away on his presidential tour in the US, his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua flagged off the first batch of subsidized fertilizers on Thursday, September 22nd 2022.
