Activist Boniface Mwangi has today launched a new political party in his bid to unseat Starehe Member of Parliament Maina Kamanda in the upcoming general election.
The new political party dubbed –‘Ukweli Party’ with a slogan Nguvu kwa Mwananchi translated to ‘Power to the people’ entrenches and lays a solid foundation at the grass root level and births a movement that will bring about change from bottom up.
Top priorities for the new political party will be to pursue policy and practice positions on social services, the economy, security and public safety, governance and leadership, and ensuring active citizenship. This will enable us forge a better, equitable, inclusive and just Kenya.
Speaking during the launch of the new outfit, Boniface Mwangi noted: “Today marks a significant milestone in our bid to bring change to residents of Starehe Constituency, Nairobi County. Our nameUkweli bears great responsibility and expectations from each one of us. It is a call to action from all Kenyans from all walks of life, religions, tribes, social strata and gender to take a liberating path of speaking truth to power. We need a revolution of thoughts, where citizens realize Kenya is their country and it’s our collective responsibility to ensure things change.”
“This country has for too long been led by the same status quo and it time that came to end. Progressive change is necessary if we are to change the country. We cannot say we have freedom when Kenyans still suffer domination, exploitations and oppression from national and international forces,” added Mr. Mwangi.
According to Boniface Mwangi, the launch of Ukweli Party will ensure that street fights graduate into the chambers were key decisions that affect the ‘mwananchi’ are made. This will ensure that people’s voices are echoed in spaces where they have been ignored for too long.
Some of the key things that Mr. Mwangi will push for should be clinch the heavily contest Nairobi seat are – Push for the reduction of salaries and number of representatives, reduction of vehicle grants, vehicle loans and mortgages, Illegal sitting allowances, unreasonable medical cover for MP’s and senators among other things.
