Fact Check: Co-op Bank doesn’t charge to buy airtime of up to Sh. 100

A claim recently went viral that you will be charged for airtime purchase made from your Co-operative Bank. The claim which was part of a photo alleged that a customer who was seeking to purchase airtime worth Sh. 10 had been charged Sh. 2 in excise duty and Sh. 10 in bank charges.

This meant that the total amount that would be deducted from their account would be Sh. 22 derived from airtime of Sh. 10, excise charge of Sh. 2 and bank charges of Sh. 10.

But is this factual? Bizna Kenya moved to establish if this claim is true. Our findings have since established that this claim is not factual.

When you purchase airtime of up to Sh. 100 from your Co-operative Bank account, you will not be charged anything. “We can confirm that we do not charge anything for airtime purchase of up to Sh. 100,” said Co-operative Bank in a response statement to Bizna Kenya.

We went further to find out if this statement was factual and indeed it was. Our attempt to purchase airtime of Sh. 10 showed that Co-operative Bank charges 0.00 in excise duty and 0.00 in bank charges.
