Popular Kenyan artist and businesswoman Esther Akoth, also known as Akothee, has granted Milly Nafula, a medical student at Mount Kenya University (MKU), Sh50,000 towards her upkeep.
Akothee handed over the cheque on the sidelines of a breakfast forum on education scholarships and funding, which was hosted by the MKU Foundation at a Nairobi hotel on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.
The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) student had reportedly spent 14 years out of school despite scoring an impressive A- in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam.
Better die than poverty, Nafula resorted to working at a posho mill to make ends meet as she was the sole breadwinner after the demise of her mother.
The hope to further her studies, which had been shattered by poverty a long time ago, was revived when her plight was aired on Citizen TV.
Properties owned by Akothee that are worth hundreds of millions
MKU Foundation, through its patron, Prof. Simon Gicharu, came to her rescue and granted her a full scholarship valued at KSh3.5 million. She joined MKU Medical School at Thika Main Campus in September 2022.
“I wish to thank Akothee for the donation, and as I have promised all my other donors, I will not let you down. I will work hard and ensure I attain my dream of being a medical doctor.” Said Nafula.
Akothee, who is the founder of Akothee Foundation, a bursary fund, rescue centre, feeding program, and a women empowerment program expressed her commitment to supporting Nafula in actualizing her dreams.
“My aim is to complement any efforts that are geared towards educating our bright students and according them a bright future. Milly is a poster child of what determination is bound to achieve.”
“In a sense, she also represents the challenges that exist in our education systems,” Akothee said while handing over the cheque.
