Tearful ex-news anchor Salim Swaleh begs for forgiveness after Sh. 5.8mn scandal

Former television news anchor Salim Swaleh has come out to beg for forgiveness in an emotional video that has gone viral on social media.

This comes after the journalist who was working as the Director of Press Service in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi was arrested and charged over a Sh. 5.8 million fraud scheme.

“Your Excellency, you have been my father figure for the longest time that I’ve known you. We’ve built an unmatched trust between us and for the last one and a half I have served you, served your good office, and served you with unmatched zeal,” Swaleh was captured saying in the video.

“I broke the trust and I’m so sorry about it. I’m truly remorseful about it.”

He went on to share how life had changed for the worse ever since he was arrested and arraigned in court.

“The last month has been so difficult for me. I’ve been unable to even walk out because of the kind of publicity I received, everything people said about me just threw me into some unchartered territory,” he said in the video.

“A lot of things have been running in my mind, very bad things, sometimes I feel like taking my own life.”

Last week, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga, for the second time, recalled Swaleh’s case file. The case was set for plea-taking before Milimani Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi.

However, Senior State Prosecutor James Gachoka informed the court that Swaleh and his co-accused had requested the DPP for a review of the file.

Initially, the DPP had approved three fraud charges against Swaleh and his co-accused. These included charges of a conspiracy to defraud, attempt to obtain money by false pretense, and abuse of office.

He was primarily accused of attempting to induce foreign nationals from Dubai and South Africa to pay a registration fee for a tender to construct two stadiums for the AFCON 2027 games, part of which will be held in Kenya.
