The Boda Boda business in Kenya is dominated by men, but 62-year-old Anna Nyaboke from Kisii County has stepped up to challenge the industry.
Nyaboke is the only female boda boda operator in the entire Bonchari constituency. The mother of one has been in this business for three good years.
The boda boda operation is not the only male-dominated sector that Nyaboke has tried her hand at, as she previously worked as a bicycle taxi driver in Nandi hills, where she lived, and later diverted to pulling hand cart popularly known as mkokoteni.
She also worked as a casual laborer in various construction sites in Nairobi, Eldoret, Nyamira, and Kisii.
While she admitted she loves her work, her journey in the boda boda sector has not been a smooth sail as she faces a lot of criticism due to her age and gender.
“The major challenge I face as a female boda boda operator is being insulted and looked down upon by the male riders.”

“They say I am old, I am not supposed to be in this industry, and I should return home and be fed by my children. They say I am not supposed to be with them, but regardless I persevere,” she told Nation.
Despite the hurdles, she has persevered, with her mission being to inspire other women, especially those in illegal businesses like brewing illicit brew, to quit the business and make a legal living.
“I want jobless women to learn from me. I am an old woman who dared to do what many frowns upon so that others can be inspired,” she added.
Nyaboke added she selflessly gives to orphans and homeless young ladies to uplift their spirits and inspire them not to give up.
She was recognized by Kisii Governor Simba Aati’s wife, May Arati, during this year’s mothers Day celebration, for her great work.
