Pain as petrol prices in Kenya to hit historic highs today

April Fuel Prices: Motorists in Kenya will from today have to dig deeper into their pockets to get fuel. This is because petrol prices will today hit historic highs. According to a report that was published in the Business Daily, a litre of petrol will shoot to Sh. 127.11 per litre. This will be an increase of Sh. 4.30 from the current retail price of around Sh. 123 per litre.

Diesel prices will also rise to levels last seen in December 2018. A litre of diesel is expected to rise from Sh. 107.66 to Sh. 109.96.

This means that petrol prices will have increased by Sh. 20.12 a litre over the past three months, with diesel up Sh. 13.56 over the same period.

Last month, the cabinet secretary in the ministry of energy, John Munyes told Kenyans to prepare to pay even higher fuel prices after April price review. “Kenya charges the highest taxes on fuel regionally. Taxes and levies are the biggest contributors to the prices. As global oil prices escalate we expect the prices in Kenya to increase,” CS Munyes told the Senate Energy committee.

As of March 2021, taxes and levies were the biggest contributor to the pump prices of super petrol and the second greatest contributor to the price of Diesel and Kerosene. Excise Duty Tax, Road Maintenance Levy and VAT account for the highest tax costs on fuel. Kenya charges the highest taxes and levies on super petrol, diesel and kerosene compared to other regional countries such as Uganda and Tanzania.
