Bag business in Kenya:
At just 24 years of age, Ian Mati runs an accessory brand company called Vintara Collections that’s making waves in the local bag industry.
Yes, he has an Economics degree from the University Of Nairobi and yes he has done a bit of ACCA. But he put all that aside to pursue his true passion –fashion.
‘When I joined campus, I wasn’t really sure if the course I had chosen would have a lot of impact in my life. But I knew I eventually wanted to do business,’ says Mati, in a conversation with KAW.
Mati, now 23 years old, started Vintara Collections in campus.
And just over two years later, the Nairobi-based start-up is a success: In 2016, it generated Ksh 1.7 million in revenue.
Bag business in Kenya: How he got started.
Before Vintara Collections, Mati was an event organiser and the last event he did got him into serious debt.
‘I was finding means to payback the cash that I had borrowed, so I met this guy who used to sell Ankara shoes and partnered with him. I’d make commissions on each sale. People started buying from me and I decided to find something else to sell so I got into bags with the aim to pay up the debt. After clearing the debt I decided to register the business and put my mind into it completely,’ says Mati.
