Bob Collymore: KPMG report being used to blackmail and extort Safaricom

Safaricom has said that allegations of corruption involving multi-billion tenders doing rounds on social media are being pushed by malicious individuals seeking to extort money from the telecommunications giant.

“We believe the individuals behind this seek to intimidate, blackmail and extort Safaricom and we will not allow this to happen,” he said.

In a statement issued by the firm on Friday, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said that there is a proactive and routine corporate governance initiative that has been trying to paint Safaricom in a negative light using the controversial KPMG draft report.

“The report was illegally obtained and leaked to the public. Safaricom has reported this matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for investigation,” Mr. Collymore said in the statement.

Bob Collymore highlighted that the draft KPMG report did not indict anyone of engaging in corrupt activities. “There is absolutely no evidence that any individuals or organizations benefited inappropriately from any of Safaricom’s commercial agreements.”

Mr. Collymore further assured Safaricom shareholders that the telecommunications giant remain committed to upholding the strong values that is associated with the company’s brand.
