JKUAT first class graduate earning Sh. 7 per brick after hopeless tarmacking

Co-Op post

With the promise of a bright future ahead to help his family from languishing in poverty, Bonface Barasa grew up knowing that education held the key to success.

Now, his reality on the matter is rather daunting, after blazing exceptionally through education milestones with high grades, but still joins the ever-growing list of educated jobless Kenyans.

Video footage shot by Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi, shared the plight of Bonface Barasa who hails from Kitale, Trans Nzoia county. Barasa’s mother stated that her son had passed in his 2013 KCSE exams after scoring an A-. He was admitted to JKUAT in 2014 for a degree.

On campus, Barasa studied B. Com (Finance Option) for 4 years, up until 2018 when he was conferred with a First Class Honors degree. Unfortunately, despite these promising credentials, Bonface has found himself struggling to get employment.

His widowed mother lamented how she had invested all her resources to educate him, as she believed Bonface would pave the way for the success of his siblings.

Speaking to a local media house, Bonface Barasa shared that the struggle of getting a job was real and he had resorted to brickmaking after endless tarmacking spanning years.

“The family has lost all hope and we are going to be their hope. I spoke to Bonface and he told me he wants to open a business in Kitale,” Eric Omondi captioned on his Instagram post.

He further urged Kenyans with connections to job opportunities to reach out to Barasa. Bonface Barasa said that a year down the line after graduating, he secured a contract employment at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS)

“This was during the clearance phase following the national census.”

His contract was renewed several times, but eventually, the work was over, leaving Barasa to face the harsh streets with many unemployed youths. He made numerous job applications, knocked on all possible doors but continued to face rejection.

This is the scenario many Kenyan youths are facing, as some have decided to break out and start their own business ventures. Bonface, on his part, turned to brickmaking earning Sh. 7 from each brick.

His request to Eric Omondi was Sh. 500,000 financial aid to fund his agribusiness dream of supplying produce from Kitale to Nairobi.

“I spoke to Bonface and he told me he wants to open a business in Kitale and supply Maize, Nduma, Cabbage and sweet potatoes to Nairobi,” read part of the caption.

“We can raise that as team Sisi Kwa Sisi in just an hour or less. The secret is to send whatever you have hata shillingi moja goes a long way. His number is 0722205638 (NAME BONFACE BARASA).”
