Cecy Gaitho’s final hours on night she died by suicide

There had been worrying signs that Cecy Gaitho might die by suicide. On her Facebook wall, she had posted that she saw no point of living when her son was cold in the grave.

But on the Sunday night of July 24 when she went to her bedroom to sleep, her friends and family would not have imagined that she was about to die by suicide.

She had shared and enjoyed a meal with her friends and family. At 11.38pm, she had posted some photos on her WhatsApp status.

Then at some point between midnight and the morning of Monday July 25, she died by suicide.

It has now emerged that she had taken a charcoal stove and locked herself in her room.

“Cecy was fine, she even prepared some food for her parents. At 11:38pm, she posted some photos on her WhatsApp status and we made fun of life. She did it between midnight and morning,” one of her friends who was present at their ‘last supper’ was quoted as saying.

One day earlier, on Saturday July 23, her friends from Nairobi had visited her at their home in Kinangop. They were worried that she was contemplating suicide. This was after she posted a series of lengthy and heartbreaking messages that painted a picture of depression and suicidal thoughts.

Her friends left Kinangop that evening. One of them was left behind to keep her company. She left the following day on Sunday. Hours later, Cecy, unable to withstand the loss of her only baby, died by suicide.

Here’s the message she had posted that pushed her friends to visit and console her:

“Today marks exactly 40days since you grew wings. Nothing has been the same, the constant ache in my heart gets worse by the minute. I haven’t been able to come to terms with the loss and I keep looking outside, hoping you will come back.

Tears have become my daily food, the emptiness I feel is immense. We had our family dreams, just me and you. The better part of me died the day you breathed your last. I want to wake up beside you like you always did. I want to laugh to your jokes, smile at your brilliance and do the many things we did together.

For now, the emptiness continues to give me that glare. I hate the very thought of my existence while you lie six feet under. I miss you baby, so so much.

You were my world, kibeti changu. I have nothing else left to live for. I want to protect you, hug you, chum your cute cheeks and tell you how much I love you. Even in death, I love you baby.”
