Cheapest cities in the world (Updated 2019)

Cheapest cities in the world: The 2019 Economic Intelligence Unit’s survey of the most expensive and cheapest cities in the world is out.

The annual survey, which evaluates the cost of over 150 items in 133 cities around the world, features a top 10 largely dominated by Asian and European cities.

In the list of the cheapest cities to live in, inflation and volatile currency fluctuations helped drive changes in this year’s ranking, with places like Argentina, Brazil, Turkey and Venezuela all seeing a sharp fall in their cost of living ranking.

Caracas in Venezuela, where inflation neared 1,000,000% last year forcing the government to launch a new currency, was ranked the least expensive city in this year’s survey.

The price of a cup of coffee in the capital Caracas doubled to 400 bolivars ($0.62; £0.50) in the space of only a week last December, according to Bloomberg.

Meanwhile Turkey’s Istanbul has become considerably less expensive, dropping 48 places to joint 120th on the list — due in part to the decrease in value of Turkish lira.
Uzbekistan’s Tashkent also experienced a big drop, falling 19 places to 131st, while Moscow is down 16 spots to 102nd. Moving up the list is Bulgarian capital Sofia, which has climbed 29 spots to shared 90th position, thanks to an increase in the price of groceries, utilities and recreation.
