Inside multimillion Siaya church built by late General Ogolla

A man of honour and a true soldier of the land, General Ogolla’s passing has sent shockwaves across the country, even among those who didn’t know him personally.

He treated all with utmost respect and was committed to adding value to people’s lives and leaving a lasting legacy in the community.

In the remote village of Nduru in South East Alego, Siaya County, General Ogolla’s impact was deeply felt. One particularly large building that stands in the area is the St. Thomas Anglican Church (ACK) Nduru.

The late Chief of the Defence Forces, Francis Ogolla, personally funded the construction of the church from his finances. The church neighbours Nduru Pirmary School.

Congregants at the church said the construction began in 2016 after they had a series of fundraisers and contributions. However, it didn’t go a long way in meeting future expenses and subsequently, the project stalled as congregants struggled to raise funds to expedite its completion.

Speaking to a local publication, the church’s chairperson of the Finance Committee said that General Ogolla extended a warm hand of assistance at the right time.

The chairperson, Fabian Okoth, stated that they had been using a church building that was too old and small to accommodate the enlargening congregation.

“It was not easy to complete building the church due to financial constraints but we thank God that our General saw the need to support us in building the church,” he said.

According to him, the late Ogolla took over the construction of the church from the lintel, roofing, plastering and painting. Additionally, the 4-star General drilled a water borehole at the church and bought furniture that is worth more than Sh. 200,000.

Late General Francis Ogolla: His biography, family, service to Kenya

Fabian Okoth stated that General Ogolla’s passing was not only a big blow to his family and the Kenya Defence Forces, but has also left the church community with aching hearts.

“General was a true Christian and he loved the church. This is the greatest gift that he has left behind for the community,” Mr Okoth added.

He mentioned that the newly completed church would serve as a place of prayer and provide a venue for community meetings. ACK Bondo Diocese Bishop David Kodia asserted the General’s profound love for the church.

“It is sad that he has not lived to witness the consecration of the church he built, but it is a legacy that will live on for very many years,” said Bishop Kodia.

General Francis Ogolla previously served as the chairman of the Military Christian Fellowship from 1994 to 2004.
