University to honour Co-op Bank CEO for banking transformation

The Africa International University (AIU) has nominated Co-operative Bank chief executive officer Dr Gideon Muriuki for the conferment of the Doctor of Humane Letters.

This conferment of Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) – DLitt of The Africa International University is in recognition of his illustrious and long-standing career in banking.

It is also an acknowledgement of the historic turnaround of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, destiny-defining contribution to the co-operative movement in Kenya and Africa, enduring commitment to sustainable finance and inclusive growth practices, and exemplary service to the nation under his stewardship.

The conferment of the honours is scheduled to take place during the 37th Graduation Ceremony of Africa International University to be held on Friday, 4th November 2022, at the Karen Campus, Nairobi.

This is the latest honour Dr. Muriuki is receiving over the last few months for his contribution to the banking sector, his stewardship of the Co-operative bank, and his relationship with customers struggling to get a footing in the wake of the economic hardships that have been occasioned by the pandemic.

In February 2022, the Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) nominated and honoured with Doctor of Humane Letters. Dr. Muriuki was honoured for his distinguished career in the banking industry, and especially his immense contribution to the co-operative sector

In October 2021, Muriuki was named the best bank CEO in Africa. Dr. Muriuki who is the the Group Managing Director & CEO at Co-op Bank scooped the best bank CEO award during the 2021 edition of the  African Banking Awards that were organised by EMEA Finance.

The EMEA Finance Awards recognizes corporate leaders and financial institutions which, through their client focus and sound leadership, continue to increase profitability, deliver affordable credit to the retail and wholesale markets, and support local and transnational corporations do business.

The EMEA Finance Awards recognized the decision by Dr. Muriuki not to push for staff retrenchment and opting to retain full staff complement during the pandemic.
