Co-op Bank Chairman’s rich career profile: In October last year, the Co-operative Bank appointed former Treasury Director of Debt Management John Murugu as its new chairman. Mr. Murugu replaced Mr. Stanley Muchiri who retired after reaching the stipulated retirement age. Below, we take an in depth look at the career profile of the bank’s chairman:

Mr. John Kamau Murugu serves as the Representative of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Kenya. He has also served as the Director of Debt Management at the Government of Kenya, Ministry of Finance.

Mr. Murugu has had over 25 years of banking at Central Bank. He had joined the Central Bank in 2007 as an Appointee representing the Government of Kenya Permanent Secretary, Treasury.

Co-Op post

He has been the Chairman of The Co-operative Bank of Kenya Limited since October 1, 2017 and its Director since May 27, 2015.

Mr. Murugu also previously served as a Director of The Co-operative Bank of Kenya Limited since 2007 until August 07, 2013. He also serves as Representative Director at IDB Capital Limited.

He served as an Alternate Director for the Permanent Secretary – Treasury in Kenya Commercial Bank, Industrial Development Bank and at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

He holds a Bachelor of Education degree and Masters of Arts in Economics, both from the University of Nairobi.
