In the early to mid 2000s, Colonel Mustafa was a household name in Kenya’s music industry. He was one part of the highly popular music duo that was known as the Duex Vultures.
With his fame came the money. However, over the last few years, Colonel Mustafa has gone silent. He has not been releasing new music and has largely fallen off the scene.
This week, though, many Kenyans who know him were shocked when a video emerged showing that Mustafa was now working as a ‘Mtu wa Mkono’ at a mjengo site.
It was not immediately clear how authentic this job was and whether it was part of a gimic to gain social media traction for which local celebrities have become notorious for, or whether Colonel Mustafa had indeed resulted to doing mjengo jobs.

When contacted by a local media house, Mustafa claimed that he had been working at mjengo sites for the last couple of months.
“When you are working there are a lot of issues, kunakuwanga na beef pia na stori mingi kwa mjengo, so maybe labda kuna mtu alileak. Hii maze ni blunder, ni blunder,” he said.
“After that information nimeshindwa hata kutembea, kwani huwezi jitafutia, sasa itakuwa aje? Na siko vizuri ivo, mambo ni ngumu bana. There is something I was doing I can’t talk a lot about it, but ni shughuli nimekuwa nikifanya for the past one year.”
He claimed that he was unaware the video had been leaked and that it was not part of a music video.
“But sasa kuna msee tu hapo I think alifanya hivo (leak the video) so I didn’t even know usiku ndio nilipata information vile nimerudi”
Mustafa then described his life as having been difficult over the kast couple of months.
“Things zimekuwa difficult hapo nyumba, after things zimekuwa ngumu kusema ukweli, kumekuwa kunoma mtu wangu,” he said.
