Co-op Bank rescues patients stuck in hospitals with bills

Co-op Bank has answered the cry of patients stuck in hospitals due to bills they are unable to pay off. The bank has donated Sh. 1 million for the release of the patients in a move that will now enable the patients to enjoy Christmas at home with their families.

This donation is one of many that Co-op Bank has been making in an effort to improve the lives of the ordinary citizens. In November 2022, the bank made a Sh. 150 million donation to help fight hunger and drought. The Sh. 1 million donation was handed over to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for patients admitted at Mbagathi Hospital, Nairobi.

“I am very grateful to the Co-operative Bank for their kind gesture and donation of one million shillings to support my initiative where all who had been detained at our county hospitals were released to go home to spend Christmas with their families,” said Sakaja.

“May God bless you so much. This particular cheque goes to Mbagathi District hospital where the total outstanding bills had come to Sh. 1.7 million.”

On December 19, Sakaja had ordered all patients detained in any Nairobi County Government hospital because of bills be released.

“Healthcare is a human right and when we support and uplift our people, the entire community benefits. I will treat this population with the dignity and respect they deserve,” Sakaja said.

He added that hospital imprisonment is a violation of human rights that also comes with implications.

“When a patient who has been discharged stays for long in the hospital, they may get hospital-acquired infections which are not always easily treatable,” he said.
