Young Millionaire at 23?
Let’s find out more about Crazy Kennar’s meteoric rise in the Kenyan content creation space.
Crazy Kennar’s background
Kennedy Odhiambo alias Crazy Kennar was born on December 23rd, 1998 (24 years as of now). He is from the Luo ethnic tribe.
Born and raised in Kenya, Crazy Kennar is the third born in a family of four, having two older brothers and one younger brother. One of his older brothers is a doctor while the other helps him in his content creation venture. The other sibling is still in high school.
Crazy Kennar started his primary studies at Sacred Heart School in Baba Dogo, Nairobi. Afterward, he attended secondary school at Ringa Boys High School in Homa Bay county.
Kennar aced the national KCSE exams and attained a spot at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) for a bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science. It was at JKUAT that Tales of Crazy Kennar was birthed.
Crazy Kennar has gained lots of fans over the years he has been making skits in front of the camera. Wise ones say ‘fame acquired overnight looks a lot more like years of consistency’.
Just like any other kind of beginning, Kennar started small, with very few fans on all Social media.
While Kennar is gifted academically, he has always had a passion for performing arts from a young age. He started acting in class 3 and regularly participated in music and drama festivals.
In the 2011 Kenya National Music and Drama festivals, he won the Best Actor Award in Nairobi County.
He continued his love for drama in high school, as an active member of the drama club. Along the way, he picked up comedy from his drama teacher.
Who knew that a few years down the line, comedy would be his insignia?
“I was never a comedian. I was a narrator in drama productions in school. The narratives used to be funny at times, but I never really saw myself as a comedian,” he confesses.
After high school, Crazy Kennar briefly held a job as a teacher in Lucky Summer, Nairobi. It was an informal job, that saw him get paid for services by the roadside.
Launching Tales of Crazy Kennar
Things changed when he joined campus where he earned himself the title ‘The Content Cartel’
On campus, Crazy Kennar partnered with his close friend Stanley Omondi to act in comedy. He sought an acting platform but never got any at JKUAT; forcing him and his pal to pioneer their own; TOCK.
This was back in 2017 when comedy on Instagram was still in its infancy.
“We did vines and other comedy skits where the main component was running around. Delivery of comedy back then was all about literally running around,” he says.
With support from campus students and friends who shared his content, one of his videos went viral and was a game changer for him. This was when he was in his second year.
Content creation is never easy, and those in the industry globally can attest to that; well unless you’re Mr. Beast giving away tons of money and prizes.
Kennar adds that before fame hit, he had a journey marred by controversies, challenges and impactful lessons.
“We would shoot one video for six hours. We were three at the time yet a one-minute video took all day to shoot. The problem was we had just started, but wanted to be pros. We wanted to take overhead shots, establishment shots, have a detailed storyline, etc. Other times we did not have a clear script and by the time we shoot the joke was gone,” says Crazy Kennar.
This was just the tip of the iceberg of the problems numerous beginner content creators face.
“After editing the video you find it is 700MB and you know your phone is 1GB, so you automatically know you cannot upload. Till now, I have videos I have never uploaded,” he adds.
Despite the hardships, Crazy Kennar acknowledges that he and Stanley at first found it fun to create these skits, all fuelled by passion.
Crazy Kennar says that he has had a significant amount of experience creating comedy skits, and he is never short of ideas.
“Ideas are everywhere. We make observations in our daily lives and then create videos around them. Like how we realized Juja is dusty,” he says.
And just like that, the two-minute videos you see on your Instagram, Tik-Tok and Twitter are born. The Content Cartel, as he calls it, is made up of a team of six who work in the Tales of Crazy Kennar Productions, where he serves dutifully as the main cast and CEO.
Along with him are actor Steven, Cynthia Wanjiru (Shee), Yvonne Khisa and Bushra who are actresses and Stanley who is the production manager.
“We all live around the same area so when we need to shoot it’s easy to trace each other. We also have working days and a central house that we use as an office.”
I know you see the videos and perhaps question if they are equally jokers in their work too. Simple, No!
The team works on as many as 10 videos in a day and works around the clock to make people laugh.
“I have a time limit on my work and following people to do their part is exhausting, especially now when I am working with brands,” he says.
His secret to being able to roll out good content consistently while securing big business deals is delegating as much as possible.
“You need a manager to focus. To be productive you need someone else to attend the business meetings and set up interviews while you shoot the videos,” he says.
