CS Owalo grants full scholarship to stranded boy who pleaded for help in viral poster

ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has offered a stranded 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) student a full secondary school scholarship after a poster of him pleading for help went viral on social media.

The student, identified as David Odhiambo Muga, achieved a remarkable score of 399 marks in the KCPE exam, earning a coveted spot at Maseno School.

The opportunity to join the national school was, however almost cut short by financial constraints as his parents do not have a solid source of income.

According to Odhiambo, his mother is unemployed while his father is a casual labourer and his mere income couldn’t cater to Odhiambo’s education, prompting him to seek help from well-wishers.

Touched by Odhiambo’s plight, Owalo paid Ksh98,625 Form One fee for the young boy, reviving his hopes of continuing with his studies.

”The amount covers School Fees, Development Fees, and Parental support to the Child of Ksh. 2,000 per term (6K per year), Uniform, Games Kits, Mattress, and other consumables.’’ The CS stated.

Through the Eliud Owalo Foundation, the CS also committed to covering Odhiambo’s Fees up to Form 4. In addition, the Foundation provided seed capital of Ksh50,000 for Odhiambo’s mother to start a business that will augment the family’s finances.

On his part, Odhiambo thanked the CS for intervening and taking him to school ahead of the Form One reporting dates set for January 15. He promised to utilize the opportunity to actualize his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon.

“In our view, education is a catalyst for transformative change, both at the personal and societal level.”

“Education stands as the great equalizer, breaking down barriers and levelling the playing field, regardless of one’s age, circumstances, or socio-economic status,” Owalo added.
