Daystar to offer degree courses on mobile phones

Technology company OneUni has developed smartphone-based degree programmes for Daystar University, a first in Kenya.

The first phase of the mobile-based programme will target primary and secondary school teachers by offering a Bachelor’s of Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education on mobile phones.

“The same rigorous curriculum used for campus-based programmes is adapted for the smartphone environment, creating an immersive and engaging learning experience. At the completion of each class, students will be required to take an in-person invigilated exam to validate mastery of the course material,” said Daystar in a statement.

“We see every day, qualified and deserving students who are not able to access higher education and Daystar Mobile degree courses will help us address this issue,” Daystar’s vice chancellor Timothy Wachira added.

OneUni is headquartered in California’s Silicon Valley in the US and has an office in Nairobi. OneUni CEO Gene Wade said with Kenya’s high mobile phone penetration, such programmes will increase education levels of masses.
