Deborah Odari: House-help gifts mom new house as Valentine’s gift

Deborah Odari who hails from Kakamega County has inspired many Kenyans with her show of love for her mother. She presented her mum with the keys to her new house on Valentine’s day.

Deborah insists that upgrading her mother’s living standards is no mean feat hence the need to be proud of her work.

She recalled how her mother had brought them up in a house infested by termites and jiggers.

After completing her secondary studies, Deborah did not only fail to join university by circumstance but she couldn’t also clear her fee arrears. This forced her to look for an alternative means of survival.

She opted to work as a house help, as a means to look for fees to clear school arrears and get her academic credentials in order.

“I did the job, got paid and went back home and cleared my school fees arrears to pick up my high school certificate. I went to Nairobi with the academic paper and worked as a hawker and mobile hairdresser in Umoja, Kayole and Tassia,” Deborah remembered.

“I started saving some money so that I could support my mother,” she added.

A while after, by grace, Ms. Odari got a sustainable permanent job. With her earnings from the job, she returned to school for further studies.

On building her mum a house, Deborah Odari claims that it was an urgent necessity. Her mother was diagnosed with pneumonia as a result of living in deplorable conditions.

“Mama was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. After treatment, I sold my maize, used Chama savings and took a loan to build a two-bedroom house for her,” she stated in an interview.

“This is the only gift I could give her this Valentine’s. She’s always encouraged, prayed, nursed and consoled me in my lowest,” she added.
