Viscount K'Owuor: Why Rigathi Gachagua must now shut up

There is the high likelihood that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will go down as Kenya’s worst deputy president in history.

Kenyans are not enthusiastic about his regular outbursts and character that doesn’t depict the picture of a sitting deputy president, a man who is a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Many people agree that whenever Gachagua takes the microphone, it is hardly to speak anything inspiring. This is what sociologist and political commentator Viscount K’Owuor looked at on this opinion feature:

“Different leaders apply different styles in their leadership. The application of such styles depends on personal traits and individual strengths and weaknesses, nature of problems to be solved in the society and which position of leadership one is acting in.

Both rhetoric and action are aspects of leadership which supplement one another.

There are a times when a leader must speak to articulate policy , to move the masses into action and to inspire his following.

But in most cases , leaders are called upon to act more and talk less.

Leaders who get away with more rhetoric than action are leaders that are charismatic, charming, articulative , eloquent, inspiring and powerful in speech.

Examples of such leaders include Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, among others.

Today , we remember those great men , mostly not for any particular action they performed, but for their words and inspiring speeches.

Leaders like Kibaki who did not have the gift of the gab are on the other hand remembered for their actual performance – how they transformed lives by implementing progressive policies.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua must learn from Kibaki. He is not charismatic. He is not charming. His words do not inspire. Kenyans can only admire him when he is solution oriented and committed to certain causes; Less talk, more action.

The bitter truth he must live with is that Kenyans cringe when he opens his mouth. So the less he does it the more comforting it’d be for the nation.

So he must shut up and get down to the business of providing solutions to contemporary national challenges.”
