Kenya to import 25-year-old diesel trains at Sh. 10 billion

Kenya is set to import diesel trains from Spain that are reportedly 25-years old. The diesel trains will cost a whopping Sh. 10 billion.

According to a report that appeared in the Sunday Nation, the trains dubbed Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) will arrive in Kenya in June.

The trains reportedly have low capacity and weaker engines. Until today, the purchase of the trains has remained a top severe at the Ministry of Transport.

“In the deal, a single train is priced at between Sh. 71 million and Sh. 137 million (without spares or any upgrade),” reports the Sunday Nation.

The fresh purchase will come hot on the heels of the SGR deal which many Kenyans have termed as a raw and lopsided deal. The SGR trains and railway line saw Kenya give away national assets including the Port of Mombasa as collateral for hundreds of billions of debt the Jubilee government took from China.
