Man’s best friend. You have probably heard of dog lovers before who have a penchant for luxurious animals. Some people pay a hefty sum just to be companions to their high-end canine counterparts. For them, it is a source of pride and a status symbol.

Over the years, there has been a paradigm shift in pet ownership in Kenya, especially among city dwellers. On a tour through the suburbs of Nairobi in the breathtaking morning/evening sunshine in Kenya, you will find these furry friends having their share of the moment.

Arguably, the most common high-end breed known to Kenyans is the German Shepherd, known for their strength, intelligence and loyalty to man. Others include the fuzzy Chihuahuas and the little Dachshunds.

1. Tibetan Mastiff

This is a large dog breed with a giant lion-like man. It is an ancient breed with a noble history as guardians of the Himalayan monasteries and homes. Tibetan Mastiffs are known for their thick double coats, protective instincts, independent spirits and devotion to families; true loyal companions.

The rarity and purity of their bloodline make them one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world. They also hold the record for the most expensive dog ever sold for Sh. 200 million.

In Kenya, the price of a Tibetan Mastiff ranges between Sh. 400,000 and Sh. 1.2 million. They have a life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years.

2. German Shepherd

Over the years, German Shepherds have been renowned for their intelligence and trainability. They were originally developed to serve as herding dogs in 1899. Over the years, their eagerness to please and sharp minds have made them superstars and favourites to man.

From assisting police and military to gentle companions and family protectors, they are well-reserved canines who enjoy man’s company. These dogs are very athletic and require regular exercise to keep their minds stimulated.

German Shepherds have a life expectancy of 9-13 years and command a price of Sh. 150,000.

3. Samoyed

It is very easy to recognize a Samoyed, picture a medium-sized white-furred Chihuahua with pointy ears. Samoyed’s are also known as ‘The Smiling Siberian Wonder’.

They were originally trained for herding purposes and pulling sledges, though they can also be friendly companions. Samoyeds know where their loyalties lie and are very intelligent and playful. They excel in teamwork activities.

A Samoyed’s friendly demeanour and nature of greeting all with enthusiasm keeps them well-behaved. They aren’t known for barking and their life expectancy is between 12-14 years.

In Kenya, it can cost a man up to Sh. 900,000 to get this affectionate friend.

4. English Bulldog

This is a British mastiff-type breed of dog which is known for its muscular build and wrinkled face. Despite sharing names with the Bulldog, this canine is far from aggressive. 

They are kept for companionship. English bulldogs are low-maintenance exercisers and will often be content joining you for a nap on the couch. This has earned them the nickname; ‘The Charming Couch Potato’. 

However, this doesn’t mean they are lazy; their affectionate personality will gladly accompany you for a walk or playtime activities. Facial hygiene is very important to these animals too. They have a life expectancy of between 8-10 years. 

In Kenya, an English Bulldog can cost Sh. 800,000.

5. Rottweiler

Even with such an aggressive name, these canines were first bred by the Romans as cattle herders. Today, they are known for their intelligence, strength, loyalty and guarding instincts.

They are among the few dogs in the world with a commanding aura as well as a confident and courageous temperament. Rottweilers are fiercely protective of their owners and families.  

However, they require many hours of training and proper socialization to ensure that their protectiveness doesn’t turn into aggression. They have a life expectancy of around 12 years and can cost as high as Sh. 600,000.

6. Chow Chow

It is quite easy to mistake a Chow Chow for a lion. This is an ancient breed that hails from China and is known for its regal aloofness. Chow Chows are not usually social, outgoing dogs and are not the cuddly type. 

They nonetheless form a strong bond with their humans easily. A Chow Chow can cost up to half a million from a credible pet store.
