The Ministry of Education has said that term two will not be extended despite the long April holiday caused by the floods.
In a circular to school heads, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang urged schools to come up with a plan to ensure syllabus coverage within the stipulated time as per the year’s school calendar.
The institutions were also asked to adjust learning hours should the ongoing nationwide heavy rains affect learning.
However, they will be required to maintain the 6 am to 6 pm guidelines as far as school transportation is concerned.
The announcement comes days after Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu disclosed that the government would consider extending the second term for an unspecified period to recover the lost time.

“Particularly for Form Four candidates, we will see how we can recover time lost by extending [the second term by] a few days. They were expected to close for three weeks in August and we might minimise the number of days schools will be closed,” Machogu said.
Schools were supposed to reopen for the second term on April 29, but the government postponed this in the wake of heavy rain and devastating floods that have killed at least 257 people.
According to the 2024 school calendar, Term two will begin from April 29 to August 2, a period of 14 weeks, with the half-term break set on June 20 to June 23.
The August holiday is set to begin on August 5 and end on August 23. Learners will then resume for the third term on August 26, 2024, until October 25, 2024. The long holiday is set to begin on October 28, 2024, until January 3, 2025.
Candidates are expected to sit for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) exams from October 28 to October 31, which is four days.
The KCSE examination, on the other hand, will run for three weeks, from November 4 to November 22.
“The examination calendar remains the same; KCSE and KPSEA will be taken in the normal time from November,” Machogu said.
