Number of students who joined Ivy League schools through Equity program

Equity Group, headquartered in Kenya, has disclosed the exact number of students who have successfully joined prestigious Ivy League institutions through their Equity Leaders Program (ELP).

The banking institution shared these figures during their third annual sustainability report for 2023, themed ‘A sustainable world is a transformed Africa’.

The current number stands at 199 scholars who have been sponsored to join prestigious Ivy League schools worldwide, showing the bank’s role in education and leadership development.

These 199 students are part of a larger group of 891 scholars who have attended global universities through a similar program.

“Equity Group Foundation (EGF) seeks to break the cycle of poverty and develop the next generation of leaders through increased access to secondary and tertiary education,” read part of the statement.

Equity also noted that their more popular Wings To Fly and Elimu Scholarship programs have provided scholarships to 60,009 bright students. Furthermore, the Equity Leaders program has supported 23,825 university scholars and alumni.

In their sustainability report from September 3rd, 2024, the bank also mentioned that Equity Group Foundation (EGF) has made it easier for people to get affordable and high-quality health care.

Their Health program helps with health financing and improves access to good health services through the private sector.

How to apply for the Wings to Fly program

To apply, candidates are required to visit the nearest Equity Bank branch or submit an application via the Wings to Fly online platform 

EGF demands that candidates fill in all the details in the 2024 application form for consideration, failure to which the applicant will be rendered illegible for the scholarship.

The application forms and selection process are free of charge and must be returned or submitted to their nearest Equity Bank branch or completed on the online platform by the set deadline dates.

Key to note is that to qualify for the Wings to Fly Scholarship, candidates must be academically promising, having scored at least 350 marks in KCPE exams, and must meet at least one of the criteria below:

  1. Children who have lost one or both parents and have no relative/guardian/sponsor to provide for their secondary education
  2. Children who are and /or whose parents are physically, visually, or hearing impaired and are unable to educate their children and have no relative/guardian/sponsor to provide for their secondary education
  3. Children who are and/or whose parents are living with HIV/AIDS or other chronic debilitating illnesses and are unable to educate their children and have no relative/guardian/sponsor to provide for their secondary education.
  4. Children who come from vulnerable and marginalised groups or indigenous communities or have suffered from cultural practices eg early marriage, female genital mutilation or negative influences including radicalization and child labour among others.
  5. Children from families affected by natural disasters such as flooding, drought, famine or civil conflict and are unable to educate their children and have no relative, guardian or sponsor to provide for their secondary education.
  6. Children who have suffered neglect and/or abandonment and have no relative/guardian/sponsor to provide for their secondary education.
  7. Children with parents living in extreme poverty and having no relative/guardian/sponsor to provide for their secondary education.

Only candidates who are shortlisted will be invited for interviews. These interviews will be conducted by the Equity Group Foundation Community Scholarship Selection Board.
