The Energy Regulatory Commission has exposed 20 petrol stations for selling contaminated fuel.

The commission conducted tests from January to March to monitor the quality fuels on sale, their transportation and storage.

In a newspaper notice on Thursday, it said 4,476 tests were conducted at 778 sites.

“[Twenty or 2.6 per cent of the sites] turned out to be non-compliant, having mixed diesel or petrol with kerosene.”

Among the 20 were Downer’s (Kasarani, Nairobi), Perazim and Imperial (Longonot and Mzee wa Nyama, Nakuru), BM (Kanyakine, Meru), Jama (Mikinduri, Kirinyaga), Rice Enterprises (Laare, Meru) and unlicensed storage sites at Chulaimbo near Lela Market (Kisumu) and in Bukembe, Bungoma.

Chesno (Mauche, Nakuru), Joska (Kiirua, Meru), David Obua (Malaba, Busia), Christoper Hamisi, (Big Tree, Trans Nzoia), Lumakanda (Kakamega), Rosk (Mikinduri, Kirinyanga), Karandi (Laikipia) were reopened after upgrading their products.

Their owners were arrested and charged, and they paid fines of at least Sh84,000 and at most Sh420,000).

In Kisumu, 420 trucks were impounded for transporting diesel contaminated with kerosene and the drivers banned from the business.

Two in Busia were released after the products were upgraded and the drivers fined.
