Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji is the winner of the 2023 to-road mile race. Welteji upset favourite Faith Kipyegon to win the race with a time of 4:21.00.

This race was the first loss for Kipyegon who has been having a super season in the 2023 calendar. Kipyegon emerged third in the race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Riga 23.

“Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji blazes to a 4:21.00 world record to grab a surprise gold in the women’s to-road mile,” World Athletics Organization said in a statement.

“Kicking away from Kipyegon – the multiple world champion and world record-holder – as they passed the Freedom Monument in the Latvian capital, world 5000m silver medallist Welteji didn’t look back,” the World Athletics said.
