Fabian Kiria, a Meru-based teacher and a former security guard, is celebrating a new milestone after successfully securing employment from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
His rise to the current role is a testament to resilience and determination, given the hardships he encountered in the quest for success.
In a post on his Facebook page, Kiria shared how he faced hardships growing up, which affected his studies. The situation worsened after joining secondary school, forcing the then form two boy to drop out of school.
He resorted to menial jobs, including working as a Shamba boy earning a Sh1,000 salary. In 2009, he landed a job as a night guard, a role that helped him to further his studies.
Kiria took the bold decision to further his studies in 2014 when he enrolled in an adult school. He would work as guard at night and student during the day.
In 2016, he sat his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam and a year later proceeded to Meru University to pursue a Bachelor of Education Science specializing in Chemistry.
He graduated in 2022 with a Second-Class Upper Division. He landed his first teaching job at St Pius Seminary, Nkubu, Meru County, as a Chemistry and biology teacher.
Despite landing the job, he continued with his night guard job. According to a past interview with Nation, Kiria revealed he took the two jobs to help him clear school fees debts.
“Since I did not have enough money to pay all my school fees at once, when I completed, my fees arrears and other bills accumulated to about Sh500,000; So I decided to keep both jobs,” he said.
Throughout his teaching career, Kiria’s dream was one; a stable teaching job. This dream came true in January 2026 after TSC absorbed him and deployed him teach Chemistry and biology at Gikurune Boys Senior School, Igoji, Meru County.
“My dream is to teach and transform the students I have. Not the ones I would like to have,” he stated.
