Millions Faith Kipyegon will pocket from breaking Olympic record

On August 10th, Faith Kipyegon broke the Olympic record for the second time. She had previously set the world record at 3:53.11, but she achieved a new Olympic best time of 3:51.29 at the Paris Olympics.

She also holds the World Record with a time of 3:49.04. At 34 years old, Kipyegon now stands as one of the most decorated athletes of all time. Her recent achievements have earned her a total sum of over Sh. 9 million.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will reward her with Sh. 6.5 million ($50,000) for winning gold in the race. Upon her return to Kenya, she will receive an additional reward of over Sh. 3 million, as directed by the president for athletes who top their competitions.

Kipyegon is also expected to receive a substantial endorsement payout from her brand partners, such as Nike. However, she will miss out on Sh. 5 million awarded to athletes who break the world record.

Kipyegon won gold in the 1500m race, in addition to her dramatic silver medal in the 5000m race, which saw her initially disqualified for obstruction but later reinstated. This is the third time she has successfully defended her title at the 1500m women’s race.

“I was really looking forward to defending my title. I had a dream, I completed it. I managed to make history, to win the gold medal in the 1500. It was my key target. I’m so, so grateful,” she said.
