Family abandons Thika grandma in mortuary; refuses to see or claim body

The family of the late Leah Njeri Gachanja who was found at her home nine months after she died has abandoned her in a mortuary in Thika.

According to reports, the family of the late Thika grandma has not visited the mortuary since the 82-year-old grandma was taken there by police. They have also not claimed the body as belonging to their relative.

The body is being kept at the General Kago Mortuary in Thika. Media reports say that the home where she was found has also been abandoned. No family member has been spotted around it.

Detectives investigating the case had earlier summoned family members of the Thika grandma. Detectives had also hinted that there was a possibility that the Mrs. Gachanja may have been killed.

There are also reports that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had instructed the mortuary not to release her remains pending investigations. However, it is not clear why the family has cast her aside.

Neighbours who spoke to the media said that they know nothing about burial preparations since the family has not spoken to them or to the nyumba kumi organization in the area.

“We are still waiting for communication from the family on the way forward,” one neighbour told the Standard newspaper.
