How FBI whisked Michael Kang'ethe from Nairobi to US in private jet

Michael Kang’ethe had been on the run from the US justice system since November 2023. This was the month that he fled to Kenya after killing Maggie Mbitu, a nurse, in the US.

He is suspected to have murdered Maggie between October 30th and November 1 in Boston and gone on to stash her body in the car’s boot, where it was later discovered at Boston’s Logan Airport.

After successfully making it to Kenya, Kang’ethe was arrested nearly two months later on January 29. He was so determined to escae facing justice that barely two weeks after his arrest, he escaped from Muthaiga Police Station in an escape that became a national embarrassment for the Kenya Police.

He was being held at Muthaiga Police Station pending his court hearing over his extradition to the US to face first-degree murder charges. Seven days after his escape, Kang’ethe was rearrested in Ngong by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He was rearrested on February 14.

After he was presented in court following his rearrest, the court granted the police their wish to have him remanded at the Industrial Area Remand Prison. He had been staying at this remand prison until Friday last week when he was discreetly whisked from Kenya to the United States in private jet by detectives from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

The detectives flew into the country on Friday August 30. A few hours after landing, Kang’ethe was handed over to them. He was handcuffed and ankle chained. He boarded the US Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) jet numbered US DOJ/FBI G550 N708JH #A97316 to Boston.

The jet departed from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Friday night and landed at the Boston Logan International Airport – the same airport where Kang’ethe had dumped the body of Maggie – on Saturday morning.
