Four Ways Churchill Has Mastered The Business Of Comedy

Written By Philip Etemesi

It’s been several years since Daniel Ndambuki aka Churchill broke out as a comedian. He started as a standup comedian in the wildly popular Red Korna show where he grabbed opportunity by the scuff of its neck and made a name for himself. Almost fifteen years later, he is still at the top. What’s the secret behind his longevity? If you study him closely, you will realize that Churchill has mastered the business of comedy.  I met him a few times and learned several things about him.

Variety

Churchill understands that variety is the spice of life. As a result, his shows are never stale. As other productions come and go, Churchill show has been around for as long as we can remember. All this is due to the fact that monotony has been eliminated. The public keeps getting served with different flavors of comedy from different comedians.  This is genius because when it comes to entertainment, the public will never tune away from anything that isn’t boring. As other comedy shows struggle for ratings, fathers, mothers, children and maids keep sitting together in unison to watch Churchill Show and share some laughter.

Opportunity

The number of funny people that Daniel Ndambuki has granted opportunities is countless. Many careers have been launched through Churchill Raw and Churchill Show. Stars have been created and lives have been changed. In business, when you give people opportunity that they would have never had elsewhere, they will forever be loyal to you. They will sing your praises and you will remain untouchable. That’s why once in a while, you see a single comedian coming out and claiming that Churchill doesn’t pay people well but Ndambuki’s image doesn’t get damaged. Other comedians come to his defense and say he changed their lives and gave them a platform to be known. “Churchill gives you a platform to shine, It’s up to you to learn how to make money by yourself”, they say. That’s loyalty right there.

Diversification

When he’s not Churchill, Mr.Ndambuki is a super MC at corporate events and when he’s not an MC, he’s a businessman, a CEO. When he’s not a businessman, he’s Mwalimu Kingangi on Classic 105. This is a man who has placed his eggs in several baskets. If one basket falls, he will have others. He might not be as funny as he used to be when he started out but the hard work is still there. Many people have talent but they ever work hard. Churchill isn’t one of those. He knows what it takes to stay on the throne.

Reaching the grassroots

In the entertainment industry, you can only make it big if you appeal to most sectors of the populace, including the common man. Churchill Show has been criticized for incorporating tribal jokes but there’s a huge benefit to this, the same kind of benefit Royal media sees by running tribe-centered radio stations. People feel like you are part of them when they can relate to whatever you are offering them.  The different comedians with tribal accents on Churchill Show appeal to a lot of viewers. The only people who don’t like it are the few elite who would rather watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Since business works with numbers, the few don’t matter. It’s the majority that do.

If there is a more competitive business out there than comedy these days, I don’t know what it is. The business of comedy has exploded in recent years, and the thing is, there is little room for error or learning curves. If your act or show isn’t funny, people won’t laugh, they don’t tune in, they surf on. The feedback is immediate, and sometimes brutal. When you come across a inner in it, you simply have to  give credit where it due. Hats off Daniel Ndambuki, the undisputed godfather of Kenyan laughter
