Kenya to spend Sh. 1.2 billion on ambassador’s house in Geneva

The government of Kenya is set to spend Sh. 1.2 billion on a residential house for an ambassador in Geneva, Switzerland.

Treasury data tabled in the National Assembly last week shows purchase of chancery and ambassador’s residence in Geneva has been allocated Sh. 1 billion for the year starting July and another Sh. 200 million for the year starting July 2019.

Initially, though, the amount needed for purchase of the Geneva property was Sh. 6 billion. This has left doubts on whether the Sh. 1.2 billion is part of the Sh. 6 billion deal that was to be paid in phases or not.

In March last year, former Foreign Affairs secretary Amina Mohamed told MPs the ministry was paying Sh. 140 million per year in rent in Switzerland. Over the past 40 years, Kenya’s diplomatic mission in Geneva has cost taxpayers Sh. 4 billion in rent money.

Geneva is ranked as the fourth most expensive city in the world, partly due to its higher cost of rents.
