How late George Magoha made hundreds of millions before becoming CS

Like any other Kenyan cabinet, former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet was dominated by millionaires. Among Uhuru’s cabinet secretaries were persons who claimed to have investments that spread to real estate, agriculture, transport, movable assets, salary, and allowances.

One of these was the late Professor George Magoha who held a highly acclaimed curriculum vitae. Prof. Magoha, who was born in 1952, has been a Kenyan Surgeon, Academic Administrator and Professor of Surgery and a Consultant Urologist at the University of Nairobi ‘s College of Health Sciences.

By the time he was appointed as cabinet secretary, Prof. Magoha said that he was worth Sh. 250 million. This was according to documents that he presented before a parliamentary committee.

The documents shared with the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments showed that Magoha had various sources of income.

His sources of money that led to this accumulation of wealth included rentals, investments in treasury bills and income from his profession, fixed cash deposit and Safaricom masts.

His success, though was largely anchored on his career. Magoha’s career progression began in 1988 when he was employed as a Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, at the University of Nairobi and in 1989 he was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in the same department and in 1995 was again promoted to Associate Professor, a position he served until 2000.

He was best known for his time as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi from 2005–2015 where he was credited to have transformed the institution from student hooliganism to a leading institution of higher learning in Kenya and beyond.

His record as a no nonsense education administrator saw him appointed as the Chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council in 2016.
