Equity Group Foundation is currently hosting form 1 and 2 Wings to Fly scholars at Kenyatta University for the 10th Annual Education and Leadership Congress. This year’s congress, whose theme is “Integrity; an anchor to academic excellence” will see the participants receive vital lessons on life skills that would will continue to shape and mould them into responsible citizens.
During the weeklong initiative, various business and academic leaders drawn from both private and public sectors will mentor the scholars. Among them Professor Paul Wainaina, Vice Chancellor Kenyatta University, Ms Patrizia DiGiovanni, Deputy Country Representative, UNICEF , Ambassador Annette Günther, German Embassy, Kenya among others.
Speaking during the congress, Amb Annette Gunther encouraged the scholars to make the most of the opportunity that they have to excel in life.
A group of German parliamentarians also recently paid a courtesy visit to one of the Wings to Fly beneficiaries at Korogocho Informal Settlement. The team, which is part of the Parliamentary Committee for Education, Research and Technology, was in the country to visit German Government funded projects, of which the Wings to Fly program is part of.
In addition, they came to Kenya to get insights into the Kenyan technology sector for purposes of bilateral exchange of ideas as a starting point for further cooperation.
The student, Jalddin Mohamed Issack, is part of the Wings to Fly beneficiaries from the area who have received support through Equity Bank Kariobangi Branch. The German Government, through KfW has supported some of the scholars through High School providing for their tuition, uniform, books, shopping and pocket money for the 4 years.
During the visit, the delegation was hosted by Jalddin Mohamed Issack’s family in Korogocho. He is a Form Three student at UpperHill School in Nairobi. One of his eldest sisters is enrolled in a TVET College and is being sponsored by well-wishers, while two other siblings do casual jobs in the neighbourhood to support the family.
The leader of the German delegation, Dr. Stefan Kaufmann congratulated Wings to Fly scholars and wished them the best in their academics and in support of their families. “Equity Group Foundation is running a good program. We are very impressed to see the bright people who will secure the future of Kenya,” he said.
The Wings to Fly program has so far benefitted 16, 168 students from across the country. With a 96%, completion rate and an average of 82% meeting University Level Grades, it has become of the most successful scholarship programme in the country and region.
