Gideon Muriuki’s career profile: Dr. Gideon Maina Muriuki, MBS, is the Group Managing Director & CEO, Executive Director, Member of the Board of Management of The Co-operative Bank of Kenya Limited.

He was first appointed as the bank’s manager in 2001. Mr. Muriuki was appointed shortly after Coop Bank reported a loss of Sh. 2.3 billion. He had joined Coop Bank in 1996 as a senior corporate manager. he was then promoted to the position of director of corporate and institutional banking in 1999 before his appointment as managing director.

Mr. Gideon Muriuki is currently also the Member of the Board’s Staff and Nomination Committee and Risk and Finance Committee.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Management in year 2011.

He has over 22 years of experience in banking and finance. He is also the Managing Director of Co-op trust Investment Services Limited and Co-op Consultancy & Insurance Agency Limited, both subsidiaries of the Bank. He is a Director of Kingdom Securities Limited, Vice President Africa, International Co-operative Banking Alliance, and Chairman, Governing Council of the Africa International University.

He was decorated in 2005 with the award of Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) and in 2011 with the award of The Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) in recognition of his turnaround of the Bank and service to the nation.

Mr. Gideon Muriuki is also a recipient of a decoration of Chevalier de L’orde National du Burkina Faso by the President of Burkina Faso in recognition of his contribution to development of rural finance in Africa.


In 2014, Gideon Muriuki bagged the Africa Banking CEO of the Year award while Coop Bank was named Africa’s most innovative retail banker for developing financial products for savings and credit co-operative societies (Saccos) as well as small and mid-sized enterprises.

Currently, Coop bank has group has six million account holders across all sectors with 144 branches, 8,765 Co-op Kwa Jirani Banking Agents and over 570 ATMs.
