Why government has initiated mass evacuation of Kenyans in Lebanon

The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has released a statement expressing their concern over a looming war in Lebanon. Due to the rising tensions, the government has launched urgent evacuation plans to ensure Kenyan citizens are safe.

“Kenyans in Lebanon, we have noted with deep concern the unfolding situation in Lebanon,” the Ministry’s statement begins.

“We are appealing to those who can move to safer areas within Lebanon and those able to leave the country to do so.”

Several channels have been established for Kenyans in Lebanon to register for immediate evacuations. Kenyan citizens have been urged to register their details using the provided link or contact the Ministry at +96590906719, +96171175006 or +254114757002.

Kenyans within the country who have family members in Lebanon have been requested to contact the same numbers or visit the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs at Old Mutual Building, Ground Floor, Upper Hill Road for safety coordination.

“We are also requesting Kenyans in the Diaspora to help convey this information to as many people as possible, especially our brothers and sisters in Lebanon,” the statement adds.

Given the delicate nature of the situation in Lebanon, the Kenyan Government has committed to offering all necessary support to ensure its citizens are safely evacuated.

The State Department of Diaspora Affairs will provide all necessary updates and assistance through socials to ensure the safety of these Kenyans abroad.

On Monday, August 5th, Beirut Airport was crowded as people attempted to leave the country fearing a full-scale conflict. Over the past week, tensions have escalated after the killing of Hamas’ leader in Tehran and an Israeli strike on Beirut’s suburbs that killed a Hezbollah commander.

Hezbollah and Iran have vowed to retaliate against Israel, raising concerns over various wars including the Gaza war which they say could escalate into a regional war.

Hospitals in south Lebanon where most clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli military have occurred are struggling. Years of economic turmoil have worn the country down and consequently, there has been difficulty in handling patients over the last 10 months.
