Former presidential candidate Mohamed Abduba Dida has been released from a US jail where he served three years. Abduba Dida was released on parole from the Big Muddy Correctional Centre on March 4 on parole conditions that he must adhere to lest he gets rearrested and sent back to complete his full time behind bars. He had been serving a seven-year jail sentence.
But how did this former Kenyan presidential candidate found himself in a US jail? It all started in January 2019 when he arrived in Illinois from Kenya. He had allegedly traveled to the US to further his studies and had claimed that he would return home once he completed his studies.
However, once in the US, Abduba Dida married his fourth wife. Back in Kenya, he had married three women, with one of these marriages ending in divorce. He had more than a dozen children children in Kenya. When he decided to marry his fourth wife, reports said that his other two wives did not raise any objections.
Dida and his fourth wife had a child together. A couple of months after the birth of his child, his US marriage hit a storm. Dida and his American wife got into a serious fight and his wife went to court seeking a restraining order which the court granted.

The order barred Dida from going near her or accessing their home. However, Dida would hear none of it. He insisted on accessing the home, and later started visiting a mosque where she attended.
His estranged wife went back to court and reported that Dida was violating court orders. He was arrested, arraigned before the court and sent to prison in 2022 for a term of seven years.
Amina, one of his wives in Kenya said that they realized that something was wrong when he failed to communicate or return their calls and texts for ten days in 2022. They contacted his estranged wife who told them that Dida was in the safe hands of the prison warden.
He was first sent to the East Moline Correctional Centre where he began serving his time in April 2022. In October 2022, he was moved to the South Western Correctional Centre where he did time until January 2023 when he was moved to the Big Muddy Correctional Centre. This prison was opened in March 1993 and has an operational capacity of 1,961 adult male prisoners. It is a medium security prison.
