Top tips to ensure successful cabbage farming in Kenya

Cabbage farming is a very good opportunity for farmers considering that it is a staple in most Kenyan homes. There is some care and dedication required in growing cabbages.

One does not require advanced skills to start cabbage farming. This crop is easy to grow and matures quite fast, thereby helping farmers earn their profits faster.

For that, though, you will have to follow certain management practices to ensure that your cabbages grow well.

Here is what you need to do when starting and during cabbage farming:

Provide Adequate Water

Cabbage requires constant moisture, especially when the head is forming. Water continuously, and to prevent waterlogging, implement a drip irrigation system.

Manure Regularly

Cabbages are heavy feeders. Well-balanced fertilizers should be applied after soil tests, with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash. Apply them at the correct growth stages for healthy plants.

Choose the Right Climate and Soil

Cabbage grows well in a cool climate and requires well-drained, rich loam soil with ample organic matter. Before planting, prepare the soil by mixing in compost or manure to improve fertility and drainage. Ensure the soil pH is between 6.0 and 6.5. Test the soil to check nutrient levels and make adjustments as needed.

Harvest at the Right Time

Harvest the cabbages when the heads are firm and compact. Take care that there is no over-harvesting, which diminishes the yield, and there is no delaying in harvesting either since a mature cabbage may split, get overripe, or go tough and bitter.

Things to Avoid Doing:

Planting in Hot Climates

Cabbages misbehave in hot climates, with poor growth and premature flowering, along with smaller heads, increased pests, and diseases.

Avoid Overwatering or Underwatering

Too much water will cause root rot or heads to split; too little water will stress them out and reduce yields.

Don’t Neglect Weed Control

Weeds fight cabbages for nutrients and often shelter pests, so keep them in control
