How to Survive with 20k Salary in Nairobi: With a small salary, surviving in Nairobi can be a real hustle. One Kenyan has come out to share how he survives with his family in the slums of Nairobi with a salary of less than Sh. 20,000. Here is what he shared:
I’m a night security guard earning Sh. 18,000. This is my monthly budget and this is how I survive living in the slums of Nairobi.
Rent 2,500
Mama 2,000
Food 3,500
Fees 1 kid private 1,500
Savings 5,000 standing order bank
Chamaa 2,000
Wife doesn’t work, planning to put up a business of her choice for her and I do other manual side hustles kama za mjengo but not regularly.
This is the Breakdown of the Sh. 3,500 for food:
1). Unga ugali poshomil @200/= two tins, we mix it with two 2kg packets @200/= total 400/= enough for a month
2). Sugar ya kupima 3kg @120/= total 360/= a month
3). 1 tray egg 360/= a month
4). 2 packets 2kg familar uji @120 total 240/= a month
5). Mchele ya kupima 4kg @120 total 480 a month
6). Unga Ngano 3 packets za 2kg @120 total 360/= a month
7). chumvi 30/=
8). Bar soap 140/= a month
9). Bathing Soap Sawa 2 @45 total 90/= a month
10). Tissue 1big roll Dawn 75/= a month
11). Salad ya kupima 3 litres @200/= total 600/= a month (this is where the problem is, it used to be cheap but it just doubled from nowhere)
12). Nice and lovely 150/=
15). Wife’s Hair 700/=
16). kiwi ya mtoto 75/=
17). Toothpaste 150/=
I earn 45k but saves Sh. 500 only. What can I do to afford a 400k plot?
The rest that’s daily foods are cheap here like sukuma wiki ya 20, omena ya 50/= nyama 200/= maybe twice a week, kitungu 1kg 100/= two weeks, gidheri/maharagwe Kikombe @30 bob watu wawili 60 kando ya barabara.

Unga ngano 2kg now is 200+ unless there’s an offer which is usually around 4bob. Are you still buying 3pkts 2kg ama uliadjust. Swali tu.
You are a good planner, I must commend you for that. It’s a skill many lack. Esp men…bravoooo
